Beautiful Daughter

This is my beautiful wonderful baby girl Zoey. She is two and a half years old and she is such a wonderful part of my life. I am writing this post about her to bring attention to how we should be striving to influence our next generation of women to have a positive self image.

My Zoey is full of spirit, spunk, sass, smarts, sweetness and love. She is the most independent little girl I have ever encountered in my life. She has such a loving spirit that if anyone around her is upset she will do whatever she can to kiss and make them better. I love all of my daughters wonderful qualities and I will always strive to raise her in a way that celebrates every aspect of who she is.

In our society women are constantly bombarded with messages of "You're not good enough" and frankly I'm sick of it. My business is based on looking, feeling and being beautiful INSIDE and out (I will write more about this later). Beauty is not only about just looking your best but being your best too.

All you have to do is turn on a reality show and women are celebrated for being stupid, wild and sexy. This is not how I intend to raise my child. I want my daughter to know that she is special and beautiful no matter what anyone else on earth might say. If we raise the future generations of women to love themselves than maybe they wont feel inclined to tear others down.

The article 15 Tips for Raising Kids With a Positive Body Image by Baby Dust Diaries has amazing tips for teaching your children how to love themselves. Here are the tips they share in the article.

  1. Never use the word fat in a derogatory way.  Avoid media that does.
  2. Never imply that you can’t do something or wear something because of your size (“oh, not with these thighs!”)
  3. Never compliment others based on size(how many times is “you look so thin!” the ultimate compliment?)
  4. Point out the beauty of diversity in people and nature – nurture the idea that beauty is diversity.  I love to say “what would the word be if all the flowers looked the same?”
  5. Avoid making physical activity about size or based on what you ate(“I have to jog off that cake”).  Physical activity should be joyful.
  6. Do not label foods as “good” and “bad”
  7. Offer a variety of foods and model moderate indulgence and a wide consumption of foods. Eating should be joyful.
  8. Don’t make your kids eat if they say they aren’t hungry1.  The refrain “finish your dinner!” should be stricken from the mommy lexicon.  Better to let them trust their bodies than feel guilt about wasting food.
  9. Don’t deny your kids food if they say they are hungry.  Another area where we often ignore our kids opinions and feelings.  Try to make your pantry a “yes” pantry with a variety of healthy options that your kids can eat when they want.
  10. Never comment on the amount (too little or too much) that your kids eat.
  11. NEVER use food as a reward, incentive, or punishment!  (this is SO abused among parents!!)
  12. Guard your children against negative body-image media – stop your subscriptions to women’s mags, don’t watch Biggest Loser, Toddler and Tiaras (focusing on appearance), and any variety of shows promoting appearance as a route to happiness.
  13. Avoid talking about a nutrionalist approach to food – disassembling “food” into fat, carbs, calories, and other things that need to be obsessed about and counted (difficult since it is explicitly taught in many schools).
  14. Encourage alternative means of self-esteem besides appearance – spirituality, values, empathy, effort, etc.
  15. Volunteer!  It is much harder to think of something so superficial as size in the face of true plight.

I love all the tips shared above and I refer to them often. I also LOVE this scene from the movie "The Help". Every little girl should be celebrated for
her positive attributes. We should refrain from pointing out flaws and encouraging the self doubts our children might feel. If I'm talking about my daughter to someone else and she is within ear shot I always make it a point to only talk about the things I love about her. I try to never say anything negative. I would hate to make her feel self conscious or insecure.

We always need be aware of what we are saying about others and ourselves in front of our children. Are we constantly calling ourselves fat? Are we always obsessing about our appearance? Do we talk about other peoples size? Do we talk negative about other peoples appearances? Just because we are not talking directly to our children doesn't mean they aren't listening. We should always think "How would I feel if my child was saying these things?". The best practice to follow is the oldest rule and one we repeat over and over to our children... If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. All the Negative things we say about ourselves and about others our children will internalize. They may even begin to think these negative things about others and worst of all about themselves. They may also begin to wonder if you are feeling these negative things about them. If you want to encourage a positive self image in your child remember to speak kindly of yourself and other and stop dwelling on appearances.

My Zoey is extremely small for her age and EVERYONE likes to point out that fact. I have learned that there is nothing I can do about this fact. She is "Tiny" as everyone says and people will continue to point that fact out to us. So instead of making her feel sad about being "Tiny" we have been embracing it. When someone says to us "Wow she is Tiny!" I reply "Yup and she is so smart". Often times I'll ask Zoey "Are you big girl?" and she will answer very enthusiastically "Yup and I'm tiny". She knows she is smart and very capable like a "Big Girl" but she is also proud that she is "Tiny Zoey". I will always encourage her to embrace who she is. I was extremely insecure as a little girl and I will do everything in my power to help my daughter be proud of who she is inside and out. She is Beautiful to the core and I will always remind her of that.

I would love to hear what you have to say as well. Please share your feelings and words of advice.

Thank you for reading and I can't wait to hear your feedback.

5 Simple Steps to Rock Red Lipstick:

I posted this a while ago on Facebook but I have a few new followers now so I thought I would share it again for all my new followers. It's becoming fall and I especially LOVE red lips for fall or winter (though in my opinion red lips are always in style).
Want to find the exact product I'm wearing? Just click on the link words below to find the products :)

Red Lips are ALWAYS in Fashion so here are 5 Simple Steps to Rock Red Lipstick:

1: Pick the Right Shade of Red for your skin color.
Warm skin with olive or yellow undertones:  choose a lipstick with orange or brown tones. (Think brick red or fire-engine red.)
Cool skin with pinkish or reddish undertones: choose a red lipstick with blue or pink tones.
When in doubt a True red looks Fabulous on every skin tone!

I have a warm skin tone so I am wearing Personi Lipstick in “Chocolate” which is actually a Brick red, and  clear lipgloss.

2: Subtle Eye Makeup and Blush.
Since Red Lipstick is so dramatic you want to do very little with your eyes and very sheer blush. If you do dramatic eyes and blush with red lipstick it can look like you are wearing way to much make up (Clown face).  In the picture above I am wearing a light dusting of shimmer powder on my cheeks, a light pink shimmer eye shadow just on the eyelid, Mascara, and No eyeliner.
For dark eye shades like mine I recommend no eyeliner. With lighter eye shades I would recommend a thin line of liner right on the lash line.
3: Don’t let it bleed.
Red lipstick has a tendency to bleed into the fine lines of the face. This is especially true with thin lips or aged skin. I do not recommend lip liner unless it matches the lipstick EXACTLY (which we all know never
happens). Instead of liner put a small dab of concealer or foundation primer on your finger and run it lightly along your lip line. This will keep your lipstick from bleeding without the crazy 80’s look of red lip liner.  (Oh! And don’t forget to check your teeth before you leave the house no one likes lipstick teeth)
4:  Dress to impress.
Remember Red lips are dramatic, so you might want to stay away from dressing too bold. A little black dress is one of my favorite accents to red lips. But you can also look amazing with a simple light top, jeans, and heels. Just stay away from a bright red dress with bright red lips (you might hurt someone’s eyes).
5: Confidence is key!
Nothing makes those bold red lips look better then a Beautifully Confident Women.

Charcoal Ombre mani

I have been acquiring a lot of charcoal gray polishes lately. So I decided to do them as ombre nails.  Well after I finished I was rather disappointed with the way it turned out. My DH was kind enough to blurt out “That looks stupid” when he saw them… so I said “Thanks honey, I know” as I glared daggers at him.  But I decided to take pics anyway. Since I had them all on they would make good comparison pics.
Here is the line up of what I used:

(natural lght)
From thumb to pinky
Milani 2.0, OPI Lucerne-taninly Look Marvelous, Essence Magnetics Hex Hex, Revlon Steel-her Heart, Wet N wild Black Diamonds.

(with flash)

The bottle Line up

2.0, LLM, Hex Hex, Steel-her Heart, and Black Diamonds

Now here’s some close ups of each

Milani 2.0- This one is AMAZING!! I got this back in my muggle days and have no idea what collection it’s from. There is very little info out there about it. I know it is different from Charmed which I had at one time also. Charmed is Black with silver glitter and 2.0 is more if a Charcoal Gray Foil with tons of shimmer. I feel like I need a leather jacket when I wear this polish, it’s Bad A**.

OPI Lucerne-taninly Look Marvelous- I just got this one in a swap and it was defiantly a WIN! I love it… Look how sparkly! It’s pretty sheer so this is 4 coats. But I think I like that it’s sheer because I can use it to layer over some other dark colors.

Essence Magnetic Hex Hex- This one was my biggest disappointment. In the bottle it looks SUPER shimmery but on the nail all the shimmer is hidden. Maybe the shimmer hides because it’s a magnetic. I also tried to use the magnet on this one and… nothing happened… Fail :(

Revlon Steel-her Heart- This one was my second disappointment. I looks SO pretty in the bottle and applied very nicely. Then about 10 mins later it bubbled like MAD! I love the color but if it’s gonna bubble then it ruins the beauty. (And nothing else bubbled so there must be something up with this one)

Wet N Wild Black Diamonds- I have always know I love this one. It’s a really nice almost black color. It applies like a dream with only 2 coats. It really looks like a sheet of gun metal on your nails!

I just don’t like this mani all together, I think the colors are all to similar and actually clash.

Welcome to my Blog!!

Welcome to my Beauty By Crystal Blog!! Since this is my first post I will use it to give you an idea of what to expect from my blog. First I will not bombard you with advertising for my store. I will however let you know whenever we are having fantastic sales and giveaways. This blog is to mostly give you a feel of what Crystal from Beauty By Crystal is all about. This will be a fun beauty blog!

Here's a little background on my Ebay store; it was started about a year ago as a little hobby to give me some extra spending money. I am a stay at home mother (this term makes me laugh how many moms actually spend all day at home... I know I spend most of my day out running around like a crazy person) with 2 children and husband that works a crazy schedule. I wanted some fun spending money for myself, so after much research I decided I would sell cosmetics and other beauty products on Ebay. My humble little store started off very slow but has really taken off in the last 6 months and now it keeps me pretty busy. Over time my inventory doubled and now we just purchased a new home with much less storage space. So right now my store is on vacation status because I am currently restructuring a lot of my inventory.  I sell drug store cosmetics, some of my products come from huge liquidation lots from stores that have gone out of business. I also buy lots of overstock lots and sometimes I'll find good deals on new wholesale products. Some of my products are "shelf pulls" this means they were on a shelf in a store but didn't sell and they ended up in my hands to sell at super low prices. Okay so that's enough about my products now on to why I sell cosmetics. I LOVE cosmetics I especially LOVE Nail Polish! The key to success on Ebay is to sell what you love, and that's what I do. I also love lipstick and glosses but my love for nail polish has also turned into a hobby for me. I love painting my nails after the kids go to sleep, I also love collecting interesting colors. Yes I keep many of the polishes that are for sell in my store (wouldn't you). I never sell knock off brands and will never buy from a supplier that has been known to sell knock-offs. I also have no shame in selling items at their going rate. If I list a bottle of nail polish for .99 cents and it gets bid up to $20 that's not my fault and I don't feel bad about it. But I try not to price gouge for Hard to find products and list them at super high prices.

I frequent nail blogs and love to read the nail forums on MakeUpAlley.com .... Don't worry girls I'm not one of those Ebay sellers that is there for information to rip you off with (I can't even find most of those hard to find products for myself anyway.). I love posting Nails Of The Day photos on Make Up Alley so I will be sharing those here with you guys too.... What is that you said?... You want to see one now?... Ok here ya go.
This is Icing- Epic Winning over Zoya-Dove. Neither of these are sold at Beauty By Crystal... Sorry

Wow hmmm what else should I tell you.... This blog is for FUN and only FUN! If I love my make up one day then I'll snap a picture and share it. If I find an amazing product that I love (even if it's not in my inventory) then I'll tell you about it and let you know where you can find it. If I find other amazing blogs I'll let you know. If I have a fun new mani I'll show it to you. If I buy an awesome new pair of shoes... You get it right :)

In conclusion I'm just here to blog about all the beauty things I love and I hope you enjoy reading my blog.
Ps: Nbers I know so many of you hate the Bay of Evil... but I hope you wont hate me :)
